The View From the Dark Side
By Justin Berndlmaier
So what's so dark about my view? Well, read on and I think you'll find out.
First and foremost, I am a proud Philadelphian, born and raised, having spent three and a half decades in the city of neighborhoods. And I have a tremendous and unabashed passion for sports.
Right there along with you I've had the pleasure of watching Tug McGraw throw that final pitch in 1980 ending a century long drought for a baseball team that desperately needed a championship, and I've suffered miserably after Mitch Williams final pitch in 1993. I can still hear the crack of Joe Carter's bat. I remember being on Broad St. in 1983 after the Good Doctor and Moses brought the championship home and being overwhelmed by the magnitude of it all. I still get chills thinking about it. But I've also suffered through the 2001 season and championship series. When Allen put the team on his back and stole that first game, he became a Philly legend in my eyes and to many others. The man wore his heart on his sleeve for this city and I'll always remember him as my favorite Sixer.
I LOVE THIS CITY down to the sky blue and yellow flag that represents it. I've shared all the sports highs and lows as each of you.... well not exactly. You see, I have to divulge a secret. And I hope you don't hold it against me, but I know you will, and that's okay.
I am a Cowboys fan.
Ok, there, I said it. I wanted to get that out in the open so we have no secrets between us. I feel so relieved to get that off my chest.
But please stay with me as I am NOT the prototypical Cowboys fan: obnoxious, front running, band wagon jumping and on and on. Basically all the things Howard Eskin says to Cowboys fans who call into his show. And by the way, Eskin is done. Go up the dial to Jody Mac on 950 instead of Eskin. You'll never go back to ‘IP again, trust me.
I've heard it all many times before, the front running and so on but I am here to tell you, that's not me. In fact, truth be told, I am not much different than any of you. I live and die with the sports teams in this city. Phillies, Flyers, Sixers, ‘Nova, Temple , Penn and Penn State are ALL my teams. But when it comes to the NFL…
One thing I guarantee and that is mine will not be an Eagles hate column nor Cowboys love fest. On the contrary, I see something the Eagles are doing well, I will say so, just as I will when the Cowboys do something not so well. No, what you can expect from me is my honest & true opinions on all things Philly and beyond. We may delve into pop culture from time to time. I pretty much go where my mind tells me to.
You may agree, disagree, hate or like my opinions, I just ask you respect them, as I respect yours.
I am Justin Berndlmaier and this is The View From the Dark Side.
