D'boys upcoming draft ...Justin Berndlmaier 4-12-08
So here we are coming up on the draft. Looking at my beloved Boys there are a few glaring needs to be addressed, but a lot depends on what Jerry Jones pulls out of his hat on draft day. We all know Jerry loves to make a big splash on · D · day, but this year short of re-signing many of his own free agents, there hasn't been a big splash for Jerry. Now don't get me wrong bringing back Flozell Adams was huge, and the franchise tag put on Ken Hamlin who had 5 INT last year will keep him around looming in the secondary, but no big splash! The departure of Julius Jones to Seattle and the release of Tyson Thompson leaves a huge need for depth at RB behind the still unsigned Marion Barber III, and they may take a shot on a first round RB such as Oregon's Jonathan Stewart or Arkansas' Felix Jones to spell Barber, but it won't be Darren McFadden and hence no big splash. Don't get me wrong I think McFadden will be a dynamite back, but I don't see Jerry trading the farm to get him.
It just doesn't make good business sense when you have a back like Barber already in place, and too many needs in the secondary. After losing Jacques Reeves, Nathan Jones, and Keith Davis to free agency, the draft must be where Jerry will address the secondary! Right? Well maybe and maybe he pulls off the oft talked about trade for Adam · Pacman · Jones...TA-DA big splash. Jerry always finds a way!
Now that won't be the only addition to the secondary. Last season the Boys had difficulty keeping Terrance Newman and Anthony Henry on the field together due to nagging injuries, thus resulting in Jacques Reeves starting 13 games and getting routinely picked on by opposing QB's. There are a few DB's in this years draft from small collegiate programs that look very promising. Justin King 5'11 · 192lbs from Penn State looks like he has the raw talent to make it in the league, Mike Jenkins from South Florida 6' 200lbs has the size to play a physical NFL schedule, and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie from Tennessee State at 6'2 · 182 lbs also is intriguing, but the one who interests me the most is Troy's Leodis McKelvin at 5'11 · 190 lbs who looks like a shutdown corner ( if there is such a thing anymore with all the rules against DB's, but that's a story for another day ) and McKelvin was dynamite on special teams throughout his career. The Boys lacked any punch on special teams last year, short of one punt return for TD by Newman. McKelvin would definitely be worth a shot with one of the 2 first round picks Jerry has.
The Boys get older at WR and who knows if Terry Glenn will play this year, and Jerry realizes that. Of course I would love to see the magic man pull Chad Johnson from Cincy or Roy Williams from Detroit , but that doesn't appear to be the case. So in the draft Devin Thomas from Michigan State at 6'2 · 215lbs has the size NFL coaches covet, and believe me this kid will be a player. Early Doucet 6' 212 lbs looks like a nice 2nd rd pick, and DeSean Jackson from Cal has big play possibility but at 6' 178 lbs lacks the body for the vigorous pounding an NFL player takes, and Limas Sweed at 6'4 · 212lbs could bring that leaping ability and size that has made Plaxico Burress into such a threat in the NFC, but there is one thing I know about this draft...The Birds take a Lineman in the 1st round.
