Statistically Speaking
The Skinny
The Eagles of course come into this game fresh off a very disappointing start to what they hope is a return trip to the Super Bowl. Much has been made of the impact the loss of Jeremiah Trotter had on Monday night and I will admit that his loss played a role. As did the poor play of Donovan McNabb. As did the unexpected misses by David Akers. But in my eyes, the Eagles were simply not ready to play football. Period. Time after time they were out of position, out of sync, out of sorts. This week they face a Forty-Niners team riding the high of having beaten the St. Louis Rams at home. Quick. How many Forty-Niners can you name? Just having some fun. My point is these are not your daddy’s Forty-Niners. Or even your older brother’s. The Niners are coming off a 2-14 season last year so they’re already on their way to besting that mark. But they will not match their win total from last season this coming week. No, unfortunately for them, they will be facing a very angry team. A team bent on taking out the frustration of Week 1 on someone. And the Niners are the unfortunate victim(s). Expect some very big plays on both sides of the ball. TO will want to quiet his former teammates. Jeremiah, et all, will look to shut down the run and play a very physical brand of football. Expect many blitzes and expect at least 3 turnovers by the Niners. Donovan McNabb will be hindered by the injury to his chest suffered on Monday, but he too will be out to put the bitter taste of Monday behind him. The bottom line is the Eagles will win and should do so convincingly. This is a statement game. It’s early but it is a statement game. And they will make an emphatic statement !
